I embarked on the prequel series to Blue Hydrangeas, an Alzheimer’s love story, starting with Christmas, because many readers wanted to know more about Jack and Sara, and their beautiful Cape Cod inn.
This story was inspired by the Great Blizzard of ’78, which I endured at age 17. Fiction is a wonderful thing in that an author can create her own world, change history, make trouble, then rescue her characters. Jack and Sara also experienced the Great Blizzard which occurred in February, but for the purposes of my story, I put them in the middle of another one on Christmas Eve. It was a bad storm, but not as bad as February’s, when many people died and life came to an abrupt stop for several frigid, frantic days. The Christmas Eve storm makes the holiday tense but ruins nothing.
As you prepare for your own holidays this year – blizzard-free, although a dusting of snow makes for a nice white Christmas – take some time to relax with this award winning story. It’s a treat. Goes great with hot chocolate.
